Exodus ch12 v13
Preached in Markethill FPC by Rev James Porter
Some of the most moving scenes of scripture which are recorded are those which have occurred under the cover of darkness. God has written certain tragedies and happenings of the night so that people are moved to see their great need of Christ as Saviour. Remember the rich fool God said to him, " this night thy soul shall be required of thee. Speaking of Belshazzer the Bible tells us that "in the night he was slain."
But perhaps there is one event in scripture, which occurred at night, which stands foremost in our mind.
That event was the night Israel was brought out of Egypt. The Bible says, "it is a night to be much observed." Our bible reading focus's upon that very night. Here we have God speaking to Moses and he says that in one single night the entire nation of Israel is going to be delivered from their bondage in Egypt. This deliverance would be through the blood of the Lamb.
God was going to visit Egypt with death every first born in the Egyptian home was going to die.
The Israelites could only be saved if they had the blood of a lamb sprinkled upon their home.
In Exodus 12 v13 Gods says, "And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.
This deliverance of Israel through the blood of a lamb, is a great picture of God's great plan of salvation for sinners. Israel's deliverance from Egypt would show how sinners can be saved from their sin & its penalty of eternal judgement in hell. This salvation is only to be found in the person and work of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is only through the blood of Christ that a person can be saved from wrath to come and can know their sins forgiven.
As you would look at this promise which the Lord made with Israel in v13 there are 3 thoughts that I want you to note regarding the Blood of Christ.
1. The necessity for Christ's Blood.
In Exodus 12 v12 the Lord says, "For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgement: I am the LORD. God was going to visit every home in Egypt with death. This was to be Gods judgement upon Egypt because of her sin. Pharaoh had miss treated Israel as slaves. He refused to let Israel go. He said, " …who is the Lord that I should obey his voice." His sin did not go un-noticed by God. Therefore God was going to judge the land with this plague of death.
Just as God was to judge Egypt for its sin a day is coming when God will judge this world for its sin.
The Bible says, " …he hath appointed a day in the which he will judge the world in righteousness…."Acts 17v31. On that day all who are still unsaved will be cast into hell, where there is eternal darkness, weeping wailing and gnashing of teeth. This day when God will judge this world is as sure and if you are without Gods salvation on that day then everlasting ruin in hell will be your portion.
Now in Exodus 12 v13 we are told that it was only through the shed blood of a lamb that the first born in Israel could be saved. It says, "And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt." Likewise on that day when God judges this world the only people who will be saved from judgement will be those who will have the blood of Christ applied by faith to their hearts. On that day your church membership good works, money or anything of self or of man will not save you. Only the blood of Christ will save you.
The hymn writer says, " when God of old the way of life would teach to all his own, he placed then safe beyond the reach of death by blood alone." Only by the blood of Christ can you be saved from the wrath to come.
Think of what would happen to your own body if it had no blood running through your veins. Your body would die, perish, decay & corrupt. Just as your body needs blood to live physically so you need to have the blood of Christ applied to your heart & soul if you are to be saved from judgement & have everlasting life in heaven.
You need to be redeemed by the blood of the lamb, like those whom Peter mentions in 1 Peter 1 v18 & 19, "Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; 19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:"
Whenever Bishop Hamilton was about to die, he could say, " my whole confidence is in the precious blood of Christ." He knew that he would be safe on the day of judgement through the blood of Christ.
Just as the Israelites needed the blood of a lamb if they were to be saved so you also need the blood of Christ if your are to be saved from everlasting judgement in hell and if you are to know the forgiveness of your sins. Heb 9 v22." And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
2. The Shedding of the Blood of Christ.
In Exodus 12, you will notice that the blood, which Israel needed if they were to be saved, had to be provided through shedding the blood of a lamb. In V's 5 & 6 Gods says, "Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats: And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.
These same words, Moses relayed to Israel and that is what Israel did. V28, says "And the children of Israel went away, and did as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they." The killing of this lamb, reminds us of how the Lord Jesus Christ shed His own precious blood for the salvation of sinners. On the cross of Calvary, Christ was crucified, He shed his blood
He provided a way whereby sinners such as you & I, could be saved from their sins and its awful penalty in a lost eternity in hell.
John 1 v29 says, " Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.."
This was the same truth that Paul mentions to the Corinthian church when he says, " …even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us: ." 1 Corinthians 5 v7. Isaiah had the same thought in mind when he said of Christ, "… he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter. .. ." Isaiah 53 v7. The blood which you so much need for the salvation of your soul has been freely shed and given, when the Lord Jesus Christ died upon the cross.
A story is told about a certain church in Norway. When ever that church was being built one of the workmen fell some height from the scaffold that was erected around it. This man had a miraculous escape because he fell on a flock of sheep below. It is said that one of the lambs, which he hit, was crushed to death. Therefore this man was made to live through the death of a little lamb.
Well in like manner you can be saved from your sin and partake of eternal life in heaven through the death and blood shedding of Christ the Lamb of God. John 3v17, "For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. In infinite love God appointed that his Son should die upon a cruel cross to provide salvation. Romans 5 v8, " But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
The Hymn writer says, "0 'twas love, 'twas wondrous love, the love of God to me, it brought my saviour from above, to die on Calvary. "
Also in Exodus 12v5 you will see that the Passover lamb was to be "without blemish". This reminds us how Christ was without sin, blemish or spot God could say in Matthew 3 v17, " …This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased". Being the sinless Lamb of God his sacrifice fully met the demands of Gods law & justice.
Then you will also see from Ex12 v6 how the Passover lamb was killed in the evening . In this you are reminded of Calvary for when Christ suffered upon that cruel tree there was darkness.
Mt 27 v45&46. Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.
46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
As you look as this Passover Lamb in Exodus 12, may you see also a glorious picture of Christ who shed His precious blood. so that a wonderful salvation could be offered to you & to me.
3. The Application of Christ's Blood.
As well as being shed every Israelite home had to apply the blood to the door posts and the lentils if the first born was to be saved from judgement. In verses 3 &7, it says "Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house: And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper doorpost of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.".
By faith the Israelites had to apply this blood and it was only this blood that was to be applied.
It was not to be watered down or mixed with anything else. In verse v13 God says, "And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you,."
The Israelites obeyed God the blood was applied through faith. By faith in the blood they were saved on the night of the Passover. Then they were to start out on their journey to the Promised Land.
Please understand if your are to be saved from your sin. Then you must have the blood of Christ applied by faith to your heart. 1 John 1 v7, … . and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin"
Only through the blood of Christ can your sins be forgiven by God and be saved from wrath to come
Only through the blood of Christ can you be sure of heaven &, have a right relationship with God.
Only through the blood of Christ can you be liberated from the bondage of sin and be enabled to live an abundant life for Gods glory here on earth.
Such mercies and blessings you will not find through the sacraments of Baptism or the Lords Supper.
You will not find them by a life of good works No you will only enter into such blessing by coming in faith as a repentant sinner to Christ and trusting in him alone for salvation. The hymn writer says, " there is a fountain filled with blood, drawn from immanuels vein and sinners plunge beneath that flood loose all their guilt stains.
The Lord says, "Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. Isaiah 1v18. Heed his words of invitation don’t be foolish and despise such an invitation. Come to Christ and have his blood applied to your heart. A person is foolish who refuses to go to the doctor when they are ill.
Will it is the greatest of folly's if you do not come to Christ and have his blood applied to your sin sick soul.
In the day of Moses the Egyptian who had not the blood applied perished. Exodus 12 v 29 &30 says, " And it came to pass, that at midnight the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle.
30 And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead.
Like wise if you do not come & trust Christ as your saviour.
If your sins are not washed away in His blood you will most surely be lost in sin & in hell forever.
Learn from the folly of Egypt, come to Christ and be gloriously saved for time & eternity.
The promise of His word is "Look unto me and by ye saved."
May you look to him & be saved Amen.
